Vinny Laczkoski, Head Coach
Going into the 2009-10 boys' basketball season, hopes were high that N.D. would continue its recent stretch of successful seasons. Observers knew that the team was going to be young and the loss of a few key players from last season might be a difficult obstacle to overcome. Despite these difficulties, N.D. found a way to win enough games to qualify for both the SWC and the Class L state tournaments. The regular season got off to a tough start, with some quality competition besting the Lancers, but once conference play began, the Lancers strung together wins (and a final regular season record of 8-12) to earn a number eight seed in the SWC tournament and a 27 seed in the state tournament. In the SWCs, Notre Dame drew a tough team and faced unbeaten Stratford, but fell to the Red Devils by only 11 points. The Lancers then focused upon state tournament action, and traveled to West Hartford to face Northwest Catholic, a team they also faced in the tournament the year before. Northwest Catholic proved to be a very tough team and ran away with the game in the second half, ending N.D.'s season with a final record of 8-14. With most players returning next season, the Lancers will look to continue to grow and mature. SWC honors were awarded to: Arkel Miles (All SWC), Marcus Ortiz (All Patriot Division), and Nick Klarides (Honorable Mention).
Eric DeMarco, Head Coach
Coming off an 8-12 season, the Notre Dame girls' basketball team hoped to build upon the lessons of last season, and regain an overall winning record. Opening up the season on the road in Hartford, the team posted a solid win over SMSA, which the Lancers hoped was a sign of good things to come. Unfortunately, though, N.D. had some tough games and offensive was challenging at times. The goal as the season moved along was to secure eight wins & qualify for the CIAC state tournament. Coming down the home stretch of the season, N.D. had six wins, with three games remaining. The team rallied together and posted wins over Masuk and Newtown, two tough SWC competitors. These wins earned them a return to the Class L state tournament, a number thirty seed, and a road trip to Wethersfield High School. In the opening round of the tourney, the Eagles proved to be tough competition for the Lancers, and ended N.D.'s season with a 57-32 loss. Losing two seniors (Jaclynn Campos and Meghan Dudek) to graduation, N.D. will look to regain their winning record in 2010-11. SWC honors went to: Nicole Negron (All Patriot Division) and Annie Sutila (Honorable Mention).
Marty Roos, Head Coach, Boys
As one of the best hockey programs in the state, it is just assumed that Notre Dame will produce a solid winning season and qualify for the Division I state tournament. 2010-11 was no different. With plenty of talent on the ice, the Lancers sought to achieve success against many tough competitors. N.D. did best most of their opponents during the regular season, including Xavier, Conard, Notre Dame-West Haven, and South Windsor. The Lancers dropped a few tough games to Fairfield Prep, Hamden, and New Canaan (in overtime). In the annual SWC championship game, New Fairfield-Immaculate proved to be no competition, as N.D. easily skated to an 8-1 victory. Earning a number five seed in the state tournament, the Lancers hosted Fermi High School in the opening round. N.D. posted a 6-2 win and moved onto the quarter-finals, where Hamden, a team that had already beaten N.D. twice, awaited. Unfortunately, Hamden managed a third win over the Lancers and ended the season for N.D. With many talented underclassmen returning, N.D. will again compete with the best teams in the state next season. SWC honors went to: Tyler Schmarr (also Division I All State), Peter Gintoli, Steve Hotchkiss, Steve Novak, Eric Sugrue - First Team; Kevin Bettini, David Canfarotta, Charlie Zuccarini - Second Team; Ben Viccari - Honorable Mention.
Kerri Rowland, Head Coach
There aren't that many high schools in the state that sponsor a girls' hockey team, but for the fifth straight year, Notre Dame was one. A team with a roster numbering in the mid-teens, the Lady Lancers gave their best effort as they traveled across Connecticut playing some of the state's best female teams. In the sixth game of the season, N.D. posted their first of five wins, topping West Haven in a tight 2-1 victory. N.D. also bested Branford (twice), Guilford and West Haven (again). The Guilford win was especially exciting, since the 3-2 victory was the first time in the history of the program that N.D. topped the Indians. N.D. also skated to a 2-2 tie against Hand, and posted a final regular season record of 5-14-1. Coach Rowland and the Lancers traveled to West Hartford for the opening round of the CGHL playoffs, but dropped the game 5-0 to Hall/Conard. The Lancers will look to continue their forward progress next season, despite the loss of the following seniors: Kelly Conniff, Bridgit Connors, McKinley Dorrico, Stacie Sopko, and Eleni Stefanatos.
Gary Tutoli, Head Coach
Traveling to Nutmeg Bowl each Tuesday, the N.D. bowling team proved to be amongst the area's best during the 2010-11 season. With Matt Bartol, Sarah Buczek, David Wojna, Scott Santiana, and David Malvicini making up the varsity squad, the team finished in fourth place on the season, but not without some drama before securing their final position. With a strike needed in the tenth frame of the final game, all eyes were on Malvicini, who produced the needed resulted and locked up fourth place for the Lancers. In singles competition, Sarah Buczek captured the league title, effectively making her the top female high school bowler in the state. The Lancers will return to the lanes confident next fall and look to continue to be amongst the best in Connecticut.
All matches are held Tuesdays, 3-5 pm.
Practices are Thursdays, 3-5 pm.
*All games are bowled at Nutmeg Lanes, Fairfield, CT.
Ed Berberich, Head Coach
Once again fielding a relatively small squad compared to their Southwest Conference competition, the Notre Dame indoor track team had a successful winter season, with senior Lindsey Russo pacing the Lancers. The team participated in five regular season meets, prior to the SWC championship meet, with Russo qualifying for the 1000, 1600, and 3200 meters for both SWC and state competition. She ultimately ran the two long distance events (the 1600 and 3200) in the Class S state meet, finishing very well in each.
