Freshman Year - Integrated Science
Sophomore Year - Biology
Junior Year - Chemistry or Physical Science
Senior Year - Physics or Chemistry
Integrated Science
This twenty week course focuses on the development of critical thinking and study skills for freshmen. This course emphasizes skills which will help students develop a more comprehensive and useful understanding of essential concepts in science: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science and Physics. It will integrate quantitative analysis into the study of each conceptual area. The goal of this course is to impart the necessary skills for students to compete and excel in high school and college. The areas of emphasis are: Scientific Experimental Design and Data Analysis, Dimensional Analysis and Scientific Math Skills, Physical/Chemical Properties and the Composition of Matter, Forms of Energy: Kinetic and Potential, and Structure and Dynamic Changes of the Earth and its Atmosphere.
Biology
This course encourages the student to develop an investigative understanding
of the life sciences through the morphology, physiology, phylogenic,
and genetic make-up of organisms belonging to the five kingdoms.
The laboratory in biology will enable the student to develop good
laboratory techniques and research skills.
Physical Science
This course is designed to give a broad approach to basic topics
of chemistry, physics, and astronomy. It will give the student additional
insight to enable a continuation in the study of physical sciences.
Laboratory work will enable the student to use the scientific method,
collect data, interpret results, present data and produce graphs.
Chemistry
This course will give the student an understanding of the interrelationships
between matter and energy with an emphasis on chemical theory as
well as on the importance of qualitative chemistry. Laboratory work
encourages the development of good technique, careful recording
of data, and the ability to interpret results.
Physics
This course affords the opportunity for students to learn to derive
equations and theorems through experimental investigations. Students
are expected to develop their own approach to developing physical
laws and theories in problem solving. Laboratory work will emphasize
accurate acquisition and analysis of data.
