Fielding a good size squad of runners, Coach Ed Berberich was optimistic that the boys' cross country team would complete well against Southwest Conference opponents. With several senior runners guiding the Lancers, the team competed in six league meets and three invitationals (Nonnewaug, Bethel and Wickham). During the regular season, the team only topped Stratford to gain a victory, but many runners showed consistent improvement in their times as the season progressed. In the SWC Championship meet, the top N.D. runner was Peter Gintoli, followed by Denis Whelan, Spencer Gerwein and Eamonn Monks. Notre Dame's top seven runners also competed in the CIAC Class S State Meet. The Boys' Cross Country team was awarded the Southwest Conference Sportsmanship Award, which is a great honor since league coaches vote to determine the annual recipient.
