ND BASKETBALL
Eric DeMarco, Coach
Talk about high expectations . all eyes were on the N.D. Lady Lancers as the 2007-08 girls' basketball season got underway in early December. With first year head coach Eric DeMarco guiding the team, and plenty of talent on the court, the Lancers were expected to make serious noise in the SWC and ultimately in the state playoffs. A Connecticut Post article previewing the season listed N.D. as one of five top area teams to watch. Candace Williams (First Team - All Conference) was also featured as one of five area seniors expected to excel and Rose Bajda (All Patriot Division) earned the same honor among the junior class. With these expectations so high, N.D. rose to the occasion during the regular season and certainly did not disappoint. N.D. jumped out to a strong start on their season, rattling off six impressive victories before posting their first loss of the season. Unfortunately for N.D., this first loss came to Staples in the N.D. Appalachia Christmas Tournament, but N.D. rallied from this defeat to win their next three games.
Throughout the season, three Lancers were regularly listed among the top scorers in the region: senior Jesika Holmes (All Patriot Division), Williams (who scored her 1,000 career point on January 11 versus Kolbe), and Bajda. During the regular season, the Lancers posted an impressive record of 17-3, earning a number three seed in the SWC tournament and a number four seed in the Class L state tournament. In SWC playoff action, the Lancers survived a low-scoring affair and posted a 36-29 victory over Bunnell to advance to the semi-finals against Immaculate. Unfortunately, the Mustangs put up a good fight and ended up downing the Lancers by ten points. After earning a bye in the first round of state tournament play, the Lancers hosted Fitch High School and posted a win by a seven point margin. In the quarter-finals, they faced an SWC opponent they knew well, a team they had defeated at the buzzer earlier in the season: Pomperaug. Once Pomperaug jumped out to an early lead, they were not to be caught and the Lancers hopes of back-to-back appearances in the state finals were dashed. With a solid group returning next season, the Lancers will look to again dominate the SWC.
