A mid-season article in the Connecticut Post sought to test the knowledge of area high school basketball fans. Question number two easily summed up the 2007-08 N.D. boys' basketball season: "Who was been the region's surprise team this winter?" After listing three choices, the writer apologized for even having to give multiple choice. The answer was an easy one: the N.D. Lancers. It was noted that no one expected Notre Dame to be as competitive as they were . and the writer even pondered whether the Lancers could be in the hunt for N.D.'s first league title. As the season got underway, no one, including second-year coach Vin Laczkoski expected the Lancers to put up the numbers and the record they produced. Apparently, no one warned the team to not over-achieve, as their talent and hustle guided them to a very successful regular season. Led all season long by seniors Matt Maya (All Conference - First Team), Alex Muniz (Honorable Mention), Dan Barbour (All Patriot Division) and Brian Jackson, and junior Greg DeSantis (All Conference - First Team), the Lancers made an early statement in a season-opening victory over Bunnell, a league power-house. N.D. then went on to win 15 of their next 19 games - including victories over Stratford, Weston, Masuk and Barlow. With DeSantis averaging over twenty points per game, N.D. posted a final regular season record of 16-4 and earned an invitation to the SWC Tourney. In the opening round of the tournament, the Lancers knocked off Pomperaug for the second time during the season and moved to the semi-finals where they faced Stratford. Sports fans often say that it is difficult to beat a team three times in the same season -- and that proved to be the case as the Lancers fell by three points to the Red Devils. Thanks to their impressive regular season record, the Lancers earned a number four seed in the Class L State Tournament where they opened against the twenty nine seeded Hand High School. Unfortunately, it was a tough night for N.D. and many shots just didn't fall. The result was a shocked home crowd and an early exit from the tourney for the Lancers. The team will look ahead with much talent returning to the court next season.
