ND BASEBALL
Paul Fabbri, Head Coach
A mid-year reflection on a 4-6 start by coach Paul Fabbri summed up the first half of the season: "we're just inconsistent". It was this inconsistency that gave the Lancers their toughest task in many seasons. A team that was a regular post-season entry each year, found itself having to work hard to scratch together the minimum eight wins needed for an invitation to the state tournament. Thanks in large part to senior pitcher Ryan Headley (All SWC), the Lancers did overcome a slow start to the season and qualified for both the SWC and state tournaments. Notre Dame, often behind Headley's pitching, defeated some of the area's best teams during the regular season: Pomperaug, Stratford, Bethel, Masuk and Bunnell. The Lancers also bested Immaculate by a 7-6 score in a long, eleven inning game. It was thanks to these quality wins that ND earned a SWC playoff game against Masuk. During the regular season, ND split the two games they played with Masuk - and unfortunately, ND came up on the wrong end of a 9-0 score in their playoff game, but still had the Class S state tournament to look forward to. Because of their 9-11 regular season record, the Lancers received a 22-seed in the tourney and had to travel to play Sport and Medical Sciences Academy in Hartford. Playing on the road proved to be just fine for the Lancers who not only beat SMS Academy by a 7-1 score, but also shut-out six-seeded Old Lyme by a 3-0 score. These wins earned ND a quarter-final round game against the three seed, Windsor Locks at Muzzy Field in Bristol. Unfortunately, Windsor Locks proved to be too tough for the Lancers who fell by a 6-1 score. Important contributions during the season came from sophomore Alex Almeida (All Patriot Division) and seniors Kevin Cosgrove (All Patriot Division), Mike Plude (Honorable Mention), and Alex Magliocco. The Lancers will look to build upon the 2007 season and bring their overall record above .500 in '08.
