Philosophy

To provide students with a knowledge and appreciation of languages and cultures other than their own in an atmosphere of discipline, Christian morality and tolerance.  The Language Department currently offers French, Spanish, and Latin.
 
Course Descriptions

French 1 (High Honors)

This course aims to develop the skills of speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. In addition to the teaching of grammar points and vocabulary, the students use the supplementary materials offered in the text which include an introduction to the culture and civilization of France and countries where French is spoken.

French 1 (College Prep)

In this beginning language course, the emphasis is on the development of listening and speaking skills. The basic grammatical structures, idioms, and vocabulary necessary for the development of the listening and speaking skills are taught. Students become skilled in responding to greetings, formulating and answering questions, identifying and describing other people and objects, asking for directions and telling the locations of people and objects, telling time, telling the date, pronouncing words and phrases using the rules of pronunciation, accentuation, and syllabication. This course also includes a general introduction to the geography and culture of regions where French is spoken.

Spanish 1 (High Honors)

This course is designed to move at an accelerated and challenging pace. The primary objective of the course is to facilitate the acquisition of the basic language skills, listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In addition to oral communication, emphasis is placed on acquiring early composition skills and mastery of grammar. Reading comprehension is developed progressing from simple readings to more complex narratives. The student is also made aware of the Spanish speaking world through cultural presentations and projects. Oral discussions and formal presentations of dialogues and cultural traditions of Latin America and Spain are required.

Spanish 1 – Honors/College Prep

This course develops the acquisition of the four basic skills necessary for a solid foundation in the study of a foreign language – listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is achieved not only through the study of the grammatical structure of the Spanish language, but through supplementary materials in the text such as vocabulary, expression, writing and oral presentation of dialogues and discussions of the culture and traditions of Spanish life.

French/Spanish 2

These courses further develop and stress the four basic skills of language learning. Lessons are geared towards mastery of grammatical structures and vocabulary. Cultural topics of the French/Spanish speaking world are also explored in detail.

French 3

This course is geared toward mastering more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary. In addition to continuing the study of French culture and civilization, students are introduced to French literature. Speaking and writing French are further developed through oral interaction in class, oral presentations and composition.

Spanish 3 (High Honors)

The primary objective of this course is the mastery of the previously acquired grammatical structures. Vocabulary emphasis is placed on acquiring the composition skill at length. Extensive vocabulary is presented to facilitate writing skills. Oral proficiency is further developed through daily conversations and oral presentations. Reading and cultural appreciation are enhanced through the use of a supplementary literature text.

Spanish 3 (Honors)

This course strengthens grammatical structures and introduces new and more complex structures. Emphasis is placed on oral proficiency. The reading skill is developed through short stories presented in a supplemental literature text. Cultural appreciation is enhanced by the readings in the text.French 4 (Advanced Placement)
This course strives to prepare students for the French Language Advanced Placement Test. The goal is to give students the necessary practice and background to express themselves clearly in both written and spoken French. Grammar is reviewed and reading comprehension is stressed. A selection of French literature gives the student further exposure to the language.

Spanish 4 (Honors and AP)

This course is designed to prepare the student for the Advanced Placement Exam in the Spanish language. The primary objective is to emphasize active communication in the language. Grammatical structures are reviewed. Focus is placed on weekly compositions, assessing students’ knowledge of vocabulary and syntax. Second, daily classroom discourse is encouraged, as are prepared and lengthy conversations. Students gain an appreciation of the varied literary works of the Spanish world. Cultural appreciation is developed using texts and supplemental material.

Latin I (High Honors Freshman)

Students will learn the relationship of Latin to other languages, especially Romance languages. During the first year of Latin, students learn the basic structures necessary in the understanding of Latin. Declensions of nouns and adjectives and conjugation of verbs are emphasized as necessary elements for mastering the structure of the Latin language. Students are introduced to translation by means of analysis of a text that is to be transposed from one language to another.

Latin II (High Honors Sophomores)

Grammatical structures continue with emphasis on participles, gerunds, forms and uses of the subjunctive in both principal and subordinate classes. Vocabulary is stressed and reading assigned throughout the year depicts Roman history and civilization. The featured readings and translations are those of the Twelve Labors of Hercules and Caesar’s Commentaries of the Gaelic Wars. Students become knowledgeable of both mythology and Roman history. A term paper related to Roman culture, civilization or history is required.


Language Requirement
All students must successfully complete two courses of a modern language. Additional courses may be taken as electives. High Honors students must also complete two years of Latin.

Advanced Placement Exams
Students may select to take the Advanced Placement tests for French or Spanish during their senior year for possible college credit.

Sacred Heart University Credit
A student who successfully takes and passes Spanish 4 (and/or Spanish 5) may earn three college credits from Sacred Heart University.
