Philosophy

The growing use of computers in business, engineering, education and at home makes computer technology very important in today’s world. It is important that students learn how to use the computer as a tool. All students will take an introductory course to computers during freshman year and a computer technology course during sophomore year. Students may select an additional computer course during their junior and/or senior year as an elective.

Course Descriptions

Introduction to Computers (Freshman)

This introductory course allows students to process documents using computers and Microsoft Word. Students will learn the features of computer equipment. The course will teach the basics of Windows 95/98 with file, folder, and shortcut operations. Students will also be exposed to e-mail and the Internet.

Computer Technology (Sophomore – 1 credit)

This course will cover the whole range of information technologies including sensing devices, processors, display and communications. Students will receive instruction in how to use the Internet in everyday life as well as a research tool. Microsoft Office will be utilized to give students a basic knowledge of application software – while working towards advanced levels and projects.

Web Design/Desktop Publishing

This course is designed to enhance the student’s knowledge of how to use the computer. Using Adobe PageMaker and Adobe Go Live, among other programs, students will design and produce pages, newspapers, letters, and brochures. Students will also be exposed to graphic design and Macromedia Flash – while designing a web page. Students will learn how to integrate graphics and animations into different web pages.

Computer Science

This course will cover topics dealing with computer programming in C++. Programming will include algorithms, top-down design and modular arrays with sorting and file applications. At the completion of the course, students are expected to design their own piece of software.

Computer Facilities

Notre Dame has three state-of-the-art computer laboratories as well as a library/media center each with nearly forty computers. Computer facilities are constantly updated and replaced in order for students to be exposed to the best technology and equipment. Print servers using Hewlett Packard LaserJet and Minolta color printers are available in each lab.
Each student is assigned an e-mail account and has access to the Internet. Students may access files and their e-mail accounts from home using web access and may also write their own web page on the school site. Computer rooms, as well as the library/media center, are available for student use daily and students are encouraged to utilize these facilities for research.
Each classroom now has a computer connected to the Internet which pushes the total number of computers in the building to nearly 200. All computers are connected to a Novell Network using four servers. Firewalls and Cyber Patrol Internal Filtering are provided as a safety factor. Our network is so advanced that it surpasses ones which are available on many college campuses!
Juniors and seniors can use the MyRoad college searching program. The College Board designed this updated program which has information on college academics, admissions, athletics, student life and activities. Students can search colleges and universities by major, size, location, etc.
